How to spot
Investment Fraud

Investment scams often start with a professional-looking website, a social media advert, a friend’s recommendation or a call from a so-called investment expert. Be cautious of guaranteed returns, pressure to invest quickly, or requests to transfer money to unfamiliar accounts.

  1. You came across the person or advert on social media or through a cold call

Investment scammers often use online adverts, messaging apps, cold calls and professional-looking websites to attract people. Verify the firm independently and be wary of unsolicited investment offers.

  2. You were encouraged to invest by “starting small” to test the investment

Fraudsters may suggest a small initial payment to build trust. They might show fake profits or allow a small withdrawal before asking you to send increasingly larger amounts.

  3. Unrealistic guaranteed returns

Promises of high or guaranteed returns with little or no risk are a major warning sign. All investments carry risk, and legitimate firms should explain those risks clearly.

  4. Receiving returns initially

Early payments may be fabricated or funded by later investors to make the scheme appear genuine. A small withdrawal does not prove that an investment platform is legitimate.

  5. Unregulated firms

Check the firm’s details directly with the FCA and be alert to clone firms using the name, registration details or website of a legitimate business.

  6. Claims of Government/local authority contracts

Scammers may falsely claim to have government backing, official partnerships or exclusive opportunities. Verify these claims through independently sourced official contact details.

  7. Pressure tactics

Urgency, threats of losing an opportunity, requests for secrecy and repeated demands for more money are warning signs. Take time to check the details before making a payment.

Investment Scam FAQs

Can Refundee help recover my lost investment?

We can review the details of your situation and explain whether we may be able to assist. Outcomes depend on the evidence, the payment method, the bank’s response and the circumstances of your case.

I’m concerned about my investment, what should I do?

Stop sending money, preserve all messages and transaction records, and contact your bank promptly. Use contact details you independently verify and report suspected fraud to the relevant authorities.

How do you recover losses?

We review the information, help prepare a complaint and explain the steps available through the bank and, where appropriate, the Financial Ombudsman Service.

What if the scammer is overseas?

Cross-border cases can be more complex, but it may still be possible to raise a complaint about the payment or the conduct of a financial provider. The facts of each case matter.

What if my bank has already rejected my case?

There may be further complaint or escalation options depending on the dates and circumstances. We can review the decision and explain possible next steps.

How long does the fund recovery process usually take?

Timescales vary with the complexity of the case, how quickly evidence is provided and the bank or ombudsman’s process. We cannot guarantee a particular outcome or timeframe.
